So i'm wondering how many of you americans who celebrate halloween are afraid to dress up as a culturally related costume, mexican, chinese or indian etc.

Is this actually a widely held belief that people of certain ethnic groups can't dress up as others because that's "bad"?

    The poll questinos,
Yay if you think cultural appropriation is a thing some people care about.
Nay if you think nobody gives a shit about it.

Time for a serious answer. Only cowards and fanatics hold that belief, lock people down to 1 vs 1 conversations and beat their rediculus arguments with some common sense.

If I take part of your culture through dressup, that is me showing interest in that culture. That is a good thing for developing relations and understanding between cultures. Good experiences with other cultures builds respect and friendship.

This korean i meet in Vietnam posted a pic of her dressing up as an indian on instagram. The comments were so ridiculously stupid it's insane.

I didn't bother engaging there since that's a waste if time, but it made me curious, how many people actually feel this way?

The only arguments for why it's a bad thing is because "it's cultural appropriation". That's the only thing they had, that was the reason..

Just like the rest of the majority mate. Loud minorities are often mistaken for majorites.

Very few knows about it. Go offline for a while and ask around if someone actually knows what "cultural appropriation" means. It pretty much only exist campus where radical ideas are considerated hard truths. At the very least in Sweden.

A few posting a lot create the impression of a majority even though they're not. If someone gives you grief about cultural appropriation, tell them to go fuck themselves, and continue about your day.

I always cringe at the random White guy who eagerly approaches me in their Jew costume expecting to get a rise out of me. Not because it's offensive, but because you look like an idiot when you go out of your way to be edgy and controversial.

I'm not touching this with a ten foot pole, but the academic argument (from the paper I thought originated the term for modern discourse, but could be wrong) is that you can only not appropriate from a culture group that is at risk of being destroyed, everything else is just cross pollination. Appropriation isn't really the right term, think of it as cultural smearing. When you're dressing up as a native princess you're creating a cultural identity that never existed, and because each of those cultures has usually less than a thousand people, their actual culture is gonna be drowned in the modern perception.

However the modern kneejerk squad took its fairly simple roots and ran a field over with it, hence 'culturally appropriating' everything from dreadlocks to drums.

But Dreadlocks has been in more cultures than just what it is associated with. Dreadlocks happend in Europe, so anyone who says it is appropriating are idiots. You don't see me complaining about people dressing up as Vikings. Or to use an example you used, vikings with horns, they never existed. It is dumb, and anyone who believes that dressing up as something is "cultural smearing" are special snowflakes who should just chill the fuck out.

Didn't we have similar threads that were about costumes and how they can be offensive? In the end it seems like it's the same arguments that are brought up.
